America’s Disabled/Open Regatta SPYC

The St Petersburg Yacht Club will once again host the Americas Disabled/Open Regatta December 1st 2016 – December 4th 2016.
This event will be scored as a part of the inaugural 2016/2017 2.4mr CanAm series
This will be the 20 th consecutive year that the St Petersburg Yacht Club,  St Petersburg ,Florida has hosted this international event for 2.4mR boats and Sonars. It includes 3 days ( Friday , Saturday and Sunday) Dec 1 thru Dec 4, 2016 of racing on Tampa Bay. Last year we were delighted to have  2 teams of wounded warrior vets  in Sonars plus a sonar team from the Judd Goldman sailing Foundation in Chicago. Ten 2.4mR sailboats competed from USA and Canada. Each year  the Grunson Milam trophy  is awarded to the top female skipper and the top female crew in order to encourage women in  sailing. Jen French , silver medalist at the Paralympic Games 2012, presented this award last year. We are looking forward to a fun regatta with good winds, sunshine,  and an excellent race committee.

News Release

Darrell Suderman wins Canadian 2.4mR Championship

Pointe Claire QC

Darrell Suderman of National Yacht Club, Toronto won the 2016 Canadian 2.4mR Championship in a hotly contested fleet of 21 boats edging out Allan Leibel of Toronto by one point and Charlie Rosenfield of Woodstock CT by two points in the six race series.

Racing on Friday August 12, was held in 14 to 16 knot North easterly winds and grey clouds as Suderman  and Leibel each took a first and a second in the two races run with Rosenfield barking at their heals with two third place finishes.

Saturday August 13th saw lighter winds in the 8 to 12 knot range with Rosenfield having the more consistent record of a one first, two seconds and a third. However Suderman won the final two races to hold onto first place while Leibel was able to discard a fifteenth to hold second.

The racers arrived at the club on Sunday August 14th to find Lac St Louis total calm. Although the wind was forecast to come in mid morning it didn’t arrive until after 1:00pm which was too late to assemble the fleet on the water prior to the cut off time at 2:00pm

The 2016 Canadian Championship had entrants from as far away as Calgary, Alberta, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and Fort Myers, Florida and speaks well for the health of the class in Canada which is enjoying its largest class membership.

Winter 2016 – 2017 events Include the North American Championships and US midwinter Championships in Charlotte Harbour Florida December 6 – 10 and the CAN AM winter series through Dec 2016 – March 2017

2016 Clagett regatta

The 14th C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta wrapped up in Newport, RI on June 26th. 15 2.4mr sailors competed in the event from Canada, Puerto Rico, and across the US from Rhode Island, Florida, Connecticut, New Jersey.
Over the course of the three day event, the race committee set the race courses against the back drop of Newport’s Pell Bridge, in between Goat and Rose Island, on Narragansett Bay. Lead by Principal Race Officer (PRO) Tom Duggan (East Sandwich, MA), the race committee did a great job setting courses in challenging currents and and varying wind directions during the entire event. Fantastic coaching from Betsy Allison and Brian Todd had the fleet bunched up, with tight mark roundings and close finishes. Hee are the links for the final press release and finalu 2.4mr results.
